A sincere attempt has been made to analyze the impact of Hindi literature on society. Morality plays an important role in literature. But contention is that up to what extent it should be emphasized. There should be a smooth passing from ‘what is’ to ‘what ought to be’. Another point of confrontation is between ‘art for the sake of art’ and ‘art for the sake of life’. Sometimes impact of vibhatsa picturisation of facts leave wrong impact on society. Materialistic culture has made literature cheap. People had lost interest in serious literature. So, both extremes should be avoided in literature. During the Bhartendu-period , a new era begin to awaken the slumbering mass and created a background to fight against oppression. After, 1936 a new stream of progressive writers came and portrayed social realities. Interest of intellectuals shifted from nature to reality. They started to write about dalits and women. Undoubtedly , Hindi literature , through its indefatigable spirit , played an important role in nation- making. It would be illogical to be pessimistic about its further progress and achievements.
