The varna-vyavastha is most complex and full of bias social system of India. Blemish of this system is untouchability. Veda , purana and other religious epic, created by Brahmins, to hegemonize people and to fulfill their personal interests. These epics established birth-based varna-system by neglecting karma and created disparity in society. Saints of bhakti era like Ravidas, Nanak, Kabir, etc. challenged this disabling system. Later Dayanand Sarawati tried to displace it by birth-based system. Mahatma Gandhi challenged only , untochability not Varna-system. Buddhism strived for an equalitarian society, but their noble attempt was aborted by Brahminism. This system diminished the unity of Indians and they failed to oppose foreigners. To get rid of this system , many Hindus opted conversion. With the advent of Christianity , many ills of society were opposed and thrown away. But this exploitary varna-system was opposed by few reformers like Phule and Ambedkar. They strived for Dalits and suppressed. Inspite of deep upheaval through reservations and some other beneficiary policies , Varna-system remains alive even today and pitting one community against other.
