The writer categorically presents the religious background of the period when Raidas was born. Every religion was engaged in a mad rush for adding numbers to their list of devotees. During this period Sant Dharma flourished with the birth of saints like Namdev, Kabir, Raidas, Dadu and Nanak. Along with them Muslim Sufi Saints, too, contributed to spreading the message of love and brotherhood. Sant Raidas was born in an untouchable chamar family of Kashi and worked as a shoemaker with his father. But his inclination was more in interacting and serving the ascetics whom he idolized. His father, upset over his lack of dedication to work had him married. He was asked to leave home to make his own identity. He started the work of shoe making and gradually great high success. But he continued to enlighten people with his rare thoughts. Slowly his prayer gatherings became quite famous and attracted lakhs of` devotees towards him. He was a humanist who negated casteism and communalism. He did not believe in idol worship and the Hindu practices of keeping fasts etc. Rani Jhali of Chittor and Meerabai were some of his important devotees.
